Carolina Xavier, Administrative Editor-in-Chief

Carolina Xavier (she/her) is a second-year MA candidate and Merey Fellow in NYU’s Program in International Relations, concentrating in International Law. She graduated with Honours from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Law & Human Rights. She is currently a Political Affairs Intern at the UN’s Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). Previously, she worked for two years with ECCO Political Consulting in Brazil and at the Brazilian National Congress. Her research focuses on Latin American electoral politics and historical regional relations. In her spare time, Carolina enjoys listening to music, reading literary fiction, and exploring niche Brooklyn cafés.

Corinne Lattermann, Content Editor-in-Chief

Corinne Lattermann (she/her) is a second-year MA student in International Relations at NYU and serves as co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of Political Inquiry. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from NYU’s Global Studies BA program, focussing on European politics and global health policy, with a minor in German. She has worked with organizations and nonprofits in the United States, Germany, and Italy, primarily focusing on global grant-making and research initiatives. She has experience working as both an editor and copy editor in previous positions held with the Technische Üniversität in Berlin and with the Women’s Foundation of Boston. Alongside her academic interests, she enjoys ceramics and knitting.

Emily Morales, Senior Managing Editor

Emily Morales (she/her) is a dynamic first-year MA candidate in International Relations at NYU, building upon her solid foundation in Public Service and Public Policy from Arizona State University. Her academic journey, which began with a focus on Emergency Management and Homeland Security, has evolved to encompass foreign policy and the human rights of immigrants and refugees. Emily’s commitment to public service extends beyond the classroom, as evidenced by her volunteer work as an EMT and her leadership roles in student government and the Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity. Her diverse experiences, from serving as a Justice in her undergraduate student council to holding a chapter officer position in Phi Sigma Pi, demonstrate her dedication to community engagement and leadership. Emily’s passion for global affairs is complemented by her love for outdoor activities, travel, and quality time with family. When not immersed in her studies or volunteer work, she can often be found hiking, relaxing at the beach, or exploring new destinations. Emily shares her home with two beloved dogs, Sassy and Koda, who provide a joyful balance to her ambitious academic and professional pursuits.

Elsie Jia, Senior Managing Editor

Elsie Jia is a Senior Managing Editor at the Journal of Political Inquiry (JPI), where she applies her extensive editorial experience to guide the publication’s content. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in International Relations at NYU, specializing in U.S. foreign policy and East Asian studies. Her academic focus is complemented by her strong interests in international security policy, political prediction, and policymaking. In her previous roles, Elsie served as editor-in-chief of the CUHKSZ student magazine and gained professional experience working at a major publishing house. She is passionate about global affairs and is committed to incorporating a broad, international perspective into her work, ensuring that diverse viewpoints are well-represented.

Koko Suzuki, Social Media Officer

Koko J. Suzuki (she/her) is a first-year student in the M.A. in International Relations (MAIR) program at New York University, concentrating on international law. She earned her B.A. in Criminology with a minor in Political Science from the University of California, Irvine, and plans to attend law school after completing her graduate studies. Koko’s academic interests focus on diplomacy, international law, and security, with emphasis on East Asian relations and Japanese politics. Passionate about global history and international affairs, she strives to bridge diplomatic gaps through research and advocacy. Outside of academic pursuits, Koko enjoys cooking, baking, and attending concerts.

River Zhi-Hui Zhang, Social Media Officer

River Zhihui Zhang (she/her) is a second-year MA student at NYU’s Journalism Institute, specializing in News & Documentary. She holds a BA in Broadcast Journalism and Cinema Studies. Her transnational background—having lived in Beijing, Hong Kong, and New York—fuels her passion for bringing nuance and depth to complex international stories. With the camera as her gateway to exploring human experiences, River has created video stories that delve into topics such as human rights, disability, gender, and diaspora. Currently, she serves as a part-time video editor for the New York Post while completing her thesis documentary.

Blaise Malley, Reporting Piece Editor

Blaise Malley is a first-year MA student enrolled in the joint Global Journalism and International Relations Program. He graduated from Claremont McKenna College in 2020 with a B.A. in government. From 2022 to 2024, Blaise worked as a reporter at Responsible Statecraft, the online magazine published by the Quincy Institute, covering the intersection of U.S. domestic politics and foreign policy. Prior to that, he has worked as a reporter, editor, and fact-checker for The New Republic, The National Interest, and The American Prospect and has written for various other publications.

Pau Torres Pagès, Managing Editor

Pau Torres Pagès (he/him) is a first-year MA candidate in Journalism and International Relations at NYU. He received his BA in Journalism with a minor in Law from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. He has experience as a radio, print, and online journalist and has been a staff reporter at Diari de Barcelona and the Spanish National Radio. As a freelancer, he has covered events such as the UN Climate Conference and the Cannes Film Festival and also worked as a fact-checker for the European Parliament elections. Additionally, he has experience in international organizations, having spent stints at the European Parliament and the United Nations Development Programme. Also interested in academia, he has worked as a Research Assistant at several universities.

Julia White, Managing Editor

Julia White (she/her, they/them) is a first-year master’s student in NYU’s International Relations program. Julia completed a combined BA/MA program in International Peace and Conflict Resolution at American University in 2021, and then worked for a few years in real estate before returning to academia — eventually, Julia plans to pursue a PhD in Political Theory. Julia’s academic interests include gender and feminist theory, political theory, political economy, and nuclear disarmament. When not studying, Julia can be found exploring Central Park while listening to podcasts, reading romance novels, and (attempting) to grow an herb garden.

Cameron Roberts, Managing Editor and Columnist

Cameron Roberts (she/her) is a managing editor for the JPI academic journal and a columnist for the JPI online magazine. She is an undergraduate junior at NYU in the Global Liberal Studies program, concentrating on Politics, Rights, and Development. Her academic and research interests lie in issues related to migration policy in the Mediterranean region and conflict within the Middle East and North Africa. Outside of JPI, she volunteers with Commonpoint Queens and Serve the City. In her free time, Cameron enjoys spin classes and spending time with friends.

Clara Apt, Managing Editor

Clara Apt is an undergraduate senior double majoring in International Relations and Middle Eastern Studies at New York University’s College of Arts and Sciences. She is a Junior Fellow at Just Security, a publication focusing on foreign affairs, human rights, and democracy at the NYU School of Law. She has previously interned for Freedom House and the U.S. Institute of Peace. Her interests include tech policy and climate security.

Jacqueline Tong, Copy Editor

Jacqueline Tong (she/her) is a second-year MA student at the Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies at NYU. She holds a BA in History from Sarah Lawrence College, focusing on modern German and Middle Eastern history. Her research interests include the history of wars and resistance in the Middle East, with an emphasis on the political and gendered interpretations of historical events. Recently, she has served as a gender specialist at the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), researching gender-based violence in conflict and natural disaster-affected regions in the Middle East.

Sara Radovic, Copy Editor

Sara Radovic (she/her) is a second-year MA candidate in International Relations at NYU. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in art history from Rutgers University in 2022, where she also wrote for the Rutgers Undergraduate Law Review (RULR). Some of her articles for RULR include Importance of National Paid Maternity Leave, The Controversial Conversion of Hagia Sophia and Law Involvement in Enhancing Education for Students with Dyslexia. She currently helps clients file claims with the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. Her primary interests include international law, human rights law, and selective commemoration of victims, particularly in the Balkans. When not studying or working, you can find her enjoying an iced vanilla oat latte at Ralph’s Coffee or exploring art museums in New York City.

Makenzie Rodrigues, Copy Editor

Makenzie Rodrigues is currently a copy editor for JPI Online Magazine. She is a second-year MA student pursuing a degree in Politics (American Politics) at NYU in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. She earned a BA in Political Science with a double minor in French and Legal Studies in the Baccalaureate Honors Program at Rider University on a full-tuition scholarship. She also was a player on Rider’s Division 1 women’s soccer team all four years. Her interests and areas of expertise include American Politics, gender and racial justice, and progressive policy. She enjoys playing soccer, going to museums, singing, and finding good spots to eat!

Nicole Monette, Copy Editor

Nicole Monette (she/her) is a second-year master’s student in the Global Journalism and European & Mediterranean Studies program. She graduated in May 2022 with a Master of Science in Global Affairs from NYU, where she completed her thesis on plausible scenarios for the trajectory of the war in Ukraine. As a Global Affairs student, she was a member of a consulting project in conjunction with the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee researching the political climate in Afghanistan following the U.S. withdrawal in 2021. She was also the Managing Editor of Global Affairs Review, the student journal of NYU’s Center for Global Affairs. Before returning to NYU, she spent eight months in Rome and Milan studying Italian at an intensive language school. She is currently researching issues related to youth unemployment and depopulation in southern Italy, specifically the regions of Calabria and Sicily.

Aryana Rostami, Copy Editor

Aryana graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a quadruple major in Honors Middle Eastern Studies, International Relations and Global Studies, Middle Eastern Languages and Culture, and History with minors in Persian and Religious Studies. Aryana’s research focuses on Marxist thought and practice in the Middle East and North Africa through the lens of Ethnomusicology and Media Studies. As a graduate student at NYU, she is concentrating her research on Iran-Levant guerrilla relations, in and out of the context of Third World Internationalism. In her free time, she enjoys film photography and trying out different recipes in an attempt to be somewhat of a better cook.

Bharath Gururagavendran, Columnist

Bharath Gururagavendran is a second-year graduate student in International Relations at NYU. He is also currently a Frederic Bastiat Fellow (2024-25) and a lawyer by training from India. As a Dean’s Scholar Fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles, he earned an LLM with specializations in International & Comparative Law, as well as Legal Philosophy. Professionally, he has been a LAMP Fellow to (Legislative Assistant to Member of Parliament) MP Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi and an Asst. Professor at Jindal Global Law School. His research focuses on the institutional design of digital public infrastructures in the Majority World, particularly in the domains of welfare service delivery, credit markets, and healthcare. His broader interests extend to the political economy of technology and development, constitutional theory, and human rights.

Cameron Roberts, Managing Editor and Columnist

Samar AlQawasmi, Staff Writer

Samar AlQawasmi (she/her) is a first-year MA student at NYU’s International Relations department, specializing in Middle Eastern and Levantine Studies. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Management from Bethlehem University in 2020. Since then, Samar has built her career in humanitarian aid and development sectors. She worked as a Project Officer at ACTED for emergency humanitarian response program to forced home demolitions and household displacement in East Jerusalem and Area C of the West Bank in Palestine. Her research interests involve the politics of West Asia, with a particular focus on the Palestinian cause, refugee and migration crisis, and security studies. When she wants to disconnect and recharge, dancing and horse riding are her go-to activities.

Maya Nir, Staff Writer

Maya Nir (she/her) is a first year MA candidate in International Relations at NYU. She received her BA in Political and Social Thought at the University of Virginia, where she wrote her senior honors thesis on Transitional Justice in Tunisia after the Arab Spring. She also studied Arabic and French languages. Maya was previously the Media Relations Coordinator for Foreign Affairs Magazine and part of the Global Communications and Media Relations team at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. She is now an editorial assistant at Just Security. When not working, she enjoys playing Ultimate Frisbee and sampling bakeries around Brooklyn.

Waleed Alouat, Staff Writer

Waleed Alouat (he/him) is a first-year MA candidate in International Relations at NYU. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from SUNY University at Buffalo in 2023. With an extreme interest in political history and theory as his foundation for political analysis, you will find his pieces also provide an alternative viewpoint to mainstream political views on present-day topics. Born and raised in Queens of Moroccan parents, you can probably spot him on any given day playing soccer at a random soccer field in Queens in his free time.
